New Influenza Recommendations for Children

An updated policy statement, “Recommendations for Prevention and Control of Influenza in Children, 2012-2013” has been early released online in Pediatrics. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends annual trivalent seasonal influenza immunization for all individuals 6 months of age and older, including all children, adolescents and young adults. The policy statement includes guidance on vaccine formulations, dosing, and administration, as well as current treatment guidance for antiviral medications. Click here for more info.

Whooping cough in U.S. on track to be worst in 50 years

Almost 18,000 whooping cough cases and nine deaths have been reported in the U.S. so far this year, setting the country on pace for the highest rates of the disease in the last 50 years, CDC officials said on Thursday. In Washington state alone there were more than 3,000 cases of whooping cough, prompting officials to declare an epidemic. WebMD (7/19)
